hawk 125 issues
i bought a hawk 125 off of powersportsmax recently. it came in super fast. i assembled it, took a couple hours. then i go to start it, it only starts with the choke fully on and it only runs with the choke fully on. it bogs super bad and max speed i got it up to is 18 miles an hour, also it does not stay running at idle. so i figured it was the carb, it definitely is. i tried replacing the carb with a nibbi 22mm and it kept the bike running at idle but the idle is stuck at 7000 rpm no matter what i do or change. does anyone know what im supposed to do. (im new to carbureted bikes) ive already contacted powersportsmax and theyre sending me a new carburetor. ANY advice whatsoever would be helpful
edit: its the street legal variant with the lights if that matters. edit 2: it actually only runs with the choke off |
sounds like the throttle cable might be bound up? check if it is running freely from the handle bars into the carb...

yep that was my first thought. its not bound up at all.

Is the slide installed correctly? Does ithe slide completely close at idle.

Slow down and get the bike running right before trying to ride it. Its a brand new motor. Riding it with the choke on, and twisting the throttle wide open is NOT doing that motor any favors. The rings have not seated to the cylinder walls yet. That or when ever you do get it to run right and it smokes all the time you will know why. Take your time, ask questions here and you will get it. Its a carb problem and sounds easily fixed. |

Update: the carb powersportsmax sent me allows it to idle and stay running it sounds okay I think but I'm wondering why it does out with the choke all the way up if anyone knows

Are all the vacuum line plugged in? Make sure there are no open vacuum lines.

Yes, it will die out with the choke ON if the motor is warm, or its warm ish outside. The only time you need full choke is in cold weather on a cold motor to warm it up. Now that you have it running some what right ride it around leisurely for a while then pull the spark plug and see how its burning the fuel, Black it's too rich, white and ashy looking its too lean. You want a nice tan brown color. These bikes are notorious for being jetted too lean from the factory to pass U.S. emissions import regs or whatever. That looks like a really nice machine from what I can see in the video. Please feel free to do a walk around video of it. I didn't mean to sound brash in my last reply. I just know what running them like that will get you. When my son was a little chap and we got him a brand new SSR70 he was very excited to ride it and it came to me way to lean and would only run with the choke fully on. So I let him ride it for a while like that. When I got the new jets in and got it running right it smoked all the time. basically it washed the piston rings out and running in that condition the rings never sealed to the cylinder wall. I had to tear it down and re ring the little motor.
