Rear brake pads
 

Here's a question I haven't seen addressed on the forum: Will the CSC replacement rear brake pads fit all known rear brake calipers? I have a single piston caliper...the CSC Service Tutorial for brake service states that both front and rear calipers are dual piston. So, do I have an oddball bike, or do both brakes take the same pads, or am I imagining things? I have to replace the pads because they have completely worn out (down to the backing. Eeek!) at 8500 miles. Surprisingly, the noise wasn't too bad and I didn't notice any problem with the braking power. The CSC pads are on the way, so I'll post an update soon enough. Comments?

As I recall, my RX3 rear caliper is a single piston design. With that said, I'm amazed that you have worn out your rear pads at 8500 miles. In over 50 years of motorcycle riding I have never worn out a set of rear pads. Good on you for realizing that your rear pads were worn out. I use the front brake for 90% of my stopping power, except in cases where the 'road' surface is less stable. In my experience the rear brake will get one in serious trouble if it is the primary braking source on a normal roadway. My RX3 will lock up the rear brake in a heartbreak, too much excitement for me.

Had to go out to the garage to confirm that mine has a single piston rear after reading this and subsequently checking the CSC tutorial. Must have been either used on the 15" wheel or a production change.

FYI, I had CSC replace my rear pads after the Baja trip last month with 14,100 miles on them. Where pretty far gone but still had a little life in them, rj

Looks like the caliper varied during the production run. I trust CSC to send me the right part. I was surprised at the accelerated wear...I think the piston may not have fully retracted and the brakes were dragging. Together with the lousy weather I've been riding in, and all the crud flung up from the road, that could have ground 'em down some.

Check your rear brake linkage to be sure it has free play and isn't causing the caliper to drag during normal riding. Mine wasn't dragging, but I loosened it up a bit more, just personal preference.

Pretty wiped out. I'll check the linkage and keep an eye on them.

I bought some of the stock, rear brake pads from Taobao, but as soon as I use up my supply, I am switching to sintered brake pads for the rear, as well as the front brake. ;)

The RX3 motorcycles imported to the United States by CSC have the latest, rear brake caliper. The U.S. bikes use the EBC FA496 brake pads employed by the following Japanese motorcycles.

Hey Spud, I find the rear brake to be a bit to "on or off" than I'd like. Especially when offroad or wet roads. Do you think a sintered brake pad would help with that? Thanks!

I don't know for sure, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to give the sintered brake pads a try. The sintered brake pads are a modest investment, and you can always switch back to the stock brake pads if you don't like the results you get from the sintered brake pads. ;)

I haven't experimented with the sintered brake pads on my rear wheel, yet. ;) However, my rear brake works much better after I made two modifications. The first mod was the installation of the Progressive shock absorber. The second mod which improved the modulation of the rear brake was restoring the original wheel geometry with a 21-inch front wheel. :tup:
