My wife's 100 dollar XR80

I'll copy and paste a bunch of info over from another thread I started a while ago on a forum I don't use anymore

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...668614916A.jpg

I don't know much about it. But it's a 81 xl80s

Looks like it has a Chinese carb on it was told it runs but needs tuning.
Has "custom" exhaust aswell header pipe is still there and all intact but looks like it has a lawn mower muffler welded to the end.

Just a tinker project/put around pit bike

Not going to be anything spectacular.
This will get everything stripped off lights ect missing most of the headlight assembly anyways.

Here's a few more pics
Unloaded it and moved it to back yard for now

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...A32D3ECE6C.jpg

The "custom" exhaust I was talking about.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...9F378A1A9A.jpg

Here's the carb. I haven't looked into it yet
Looks Chinese. Looks permatexed on to

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...C868032F79.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...31BCD4B04D.jpg

And just another angle

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...7170B4F91E.jpg

I don't think I'll be saving headlight or anything on this. Just strip it down and make it a rider

Need to get carb all sorted out. Inside of tank is pretty rusted. And need to find a few bolts for left side cover. That's basically it for now. Possibly tubes for the tires but I'll start with getting it running

IT RUNS

Nothing to big for update but moved it in the yard today and thought I'd see if it ran. Gas tank still crusty rusty and not plumbed to carb yet anyways. But sprayed gas in the carb and fired first kick.

Surprisingly not to loud with the custom exhaust.
Going to look for some apple cider vinegar for the tank. And hopefully the carb dissent need to much tuning and hopefully it runs good with it.
If not a Chinese xr carb is like 20 bucks on eBay and I'll start from scratch with something I kinda know.

I let it soak with vinegar for about 3 days tank came out incredibly clean

It lives....kinda
Needs some work yet but was able to ride it
Only runs with choke on and can't rev it or it dies. Idles high so was rideable

Sorry if these vids aren't forum friendly edit and remove vids if not. Or let me know and I will

http://emobmg.photobucket.com/albums...59EA504904.jpg

Soo I decided to throw some money at this project

It has and came with stupid BMX grips on it so I went ahead and ordered theses up
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/171177796417
Black ones

I still need to get it running properly. Haven't touched the bike since the weekend
I'm hoping to just "tune" the carbs and get it to run
Still need to strip off the useless junk
And want to eventually put a different muffler on. Even just a Chinese atv/motorcycle muffler but we'll see

Not going to be pouring money into this or be coming anywhere near a restoration
Just going to be a dirt bike

I ended up ordering a chinesse carb off eBay for it. Was 20 bucks
I was to impatient to look for or order a jet so I drilled one out. Runs awesome

Small update
Went with the carb posted and drilled out the jet. Runs awesome now lol
Tore out old air box. Running a uni filter. Cleaned up all wiring
I'll get pics up in a bit.

For what I got into this beast it's going to be fun
Not as fast as I remember. Mind you last time I rode one was about 12 years and 100 or so pounds ago lol

Dave

I apologize if the information seems scattered but seemed lie quickest easiest way to get this topic started
I ruined the first uni filter I had on it. (Wrong size for carb)
I have one ordered should be here Thursday or Friday I'll put up to date pics up then

Dave

Dave_D 07-30-2014 01:43 AM

To sum everything up
It has a completely different carb on it then when I bought it
It has all the useless junk stripped off of it
It's rewired with 1 wire instead of 4. Kill switch still functions wanted it to for wife's sake
Gas tank is all cleaned out
It has a broken stud on header. Looks like someone got creative and tryed to weld it back on at some point with no luck
Has new grips on it
Never had the side covers for it. I tore the original air box out completely and run a uni filter

If I think of anything else I'll post it.
Updated pictures coming soon :)

How did you get rid of the rust from the inside of the tank?

bogieboy 07-30-2014 08:14 AM

very nice.... brings back memories of my 79 xl75...that got trashed about as much as yours.... i hoiwever decided to go a different route with mine...LOL its not recognizable as a bike anymore... its got four wheels... and a straight pipe....LOL i apologize in advance for the crude language by some of the guys...

Thanks for showing us your XL project. There's nothing wrong with the layout of your thread.

If you choose to, you can throw the lights and signals back on a later date, and obtain regi from ICBC. I've done it several times, and it adds considerable value to the bike. It doesn't have to be a restoration to claim the regi; only functional.

I bought a small supermoto front fender for my Lifan that would be perfect on that XL80, and it was only about $6.00. http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=2979100123

I built a custom muffler for my old XL250S that was pretty simple; perhaps you could make something similar work. Read about it here: http://www.chinariders.net/showthread.php?t=10096

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...S/DSC06025.jpg

If you really get silly in the future, you could bolt in a 200cc China motor. :D

I filled the tank to the top with vinagar and let it sit for about 72 hours this tank was bad.
Then I pressure washed the inside to get all the gunk out
Probably could of got away with just using just a hose

Once it's done you must fill it or coat the inside with oil or something or it will just flash rust

X2. Please tell us where you bought the apple cider vinegar, how much you used and how long it took. Thanks!

Weldangrind 07-30-2014 10:39 AM

Sorry, posted at the same time.

That's a very nice muffler. I'll keep it in mind.

Think a 200cc motor would bolt in ?

I ended up using white vinagar
Either will work. And Walmart has both fairly cheep

Thanks. It was really easy to make, although welding onto the original rusty steel was tricky.

Yes, I think a 200 would bolt in. :D You could make a little hot rod out of it, and terrorize the neighbourhood.

FYI, it's a $7.00 fee at ICBC, plus a notarized signature (about $30) and a registered letter (about $8). Having a plate on a little bike like that would be grin-inducing.

I'm gonna try that on an XT350 tank I have. I was thinking of rinsing it with Varsol to prevent flash rusting; do you think that'll work?

I'm not sure if that would work.
But I've heard "fogging" the tank with WD-40 works
Or just fill it up

Dave

Dave_D 07-30-2014 01:08 PM

I never got step by step photos of the process
But here's inside the tank after

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4CB329C0B5.jpg

I run an inline filter on this bike
Should of seen the one I had on it before cleaning it out
Dident help much rust and crud still plugged the carb

looks like a fun project. and a rat bike keeps the punk rocker within happy :-) but i d get rid of that front fender, though it probably does a good job given its huge size.

The plan is to trim it to a more manageable size
And paint it
Wife wants a nicer bike now after seeing mine and our daughters lol
She's still learning a clutch bike so I think this ones perfect for learning
Maybe she'll like it better painted to her taste and a new seat cover

Fill it up works in past day (pure gas) ONLY.

A couple more pictures to make the thread a little more interesting.

The china carb I bought for it
Had to ad 2 extra bends to the choke lever to clear frame. But works awesome now.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...785A167674.jpg

Picture of the front end all cleaned up.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...C18D765967.jpg

I ordered a new petcock for it. It's not sealing completely anymore. Rust going through it at first must of killed it
http://www.ebay.com/itm/271268429437

It's a functional work in progress. There's lots I want to do to this but I have a limited budget so sometimes things take a while.

Once air filter is here I'll get some better overal pics

Dave

Dave_D 08-01-2014 11:51 PM

Air filter arrived
I love these filters. I've got quite the handful of stickers out of them now

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...5E08C7C6F6.jpg

Installed on bike

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...A6C21320_1.jpg

Fits perfect
I tryed using one that was 1 1/2 ID in the start. No go. Just ended up tearing
So I ordered this one 1 1/4

Here's a couple other pics of the bike.
The "custom" 1 wire wiring job
The condencer is behind the fuel filter self tapered to the frame
I tryed it without the condencer at first but it ran like garbage

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...2473E7AF87.jpg

Pic from rear

And a couple side shots

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...655692E078.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...936E534E62.jpg

I also changed the oil on this bike. Was loooonnngggg overdue

That's all for now

Dave

If you'd like a less expensive option for next time, this is my favourite: Pod Filter It has a really decent core that is well bonded to the rubber neck, and it has the typical coarse filter on the outside. Can't beat the price.

Is the seat pan plastic or metal?

It would be handy to find a cheap kickstand. If I had a spare, I'd send you one.

That filter is incredibly cheep. I always had a hard time finding sizes on eBay I needed.
Added to watch list for future reference

Metal seat pan. I wish it was plastic
I have this in my eBay watch list
http://www.ebay.com/itm/280792490026
Just hessatant to pull the trigger and buy it lol

I'm half tempted to buy material and try myself. But for 35 bucks it should fit perfect.

I'm half tempted to make a kickstand for it.
Would defanatly make my life easier. It's constantly falling over whenever we go riding. I usually lean it against my truck. Then forget about it and start hopping in and out of the truck.
I don't think it would be to hard to make one. I'll just have to source a spring for it

Dave

SpudRider 08-02-2014 03:13 AM

You're making good progress. :) That is a very cool 'project bike.'

I've used several of those filters on 30mm Mikuni carbs with very good results; I haven't had one tear yet. If the OD of your quad is 42mm, it will be perfect.

The formed seat covers are sure nice for a resto look, but you're not going for that. Head to Fabricland in Duncan and see if they have Daytona vinyl in stock. I bought enough red Daytona to cover two seats for less than $10, and it's UV-rated for outdoor use. Good stuff.

It will be a little tough to cover the metal seat pan, but it can still be done. In addition to the punched metal triangles, you can also use short sheetmetal screws, since the foam will never compress enough to poke someone in the bum.

Here's an XR100 kickstand and pegs for cheap: http://www.ebay.com/itm/XR100R-Footp...727ecd&vxp=mtr

I think that's what I will end up doing for the seat. Get a few try's for the price of the formed cover. And it doesn't need to be perfect.

25 bucks shipping puts that stand at 50 bucks if I go with the "buy now"
I'm going to keeps cowering eBay for now
Until I look at it again. I think I can make one though lol

We'll just have to wait and see

Dave

Weldangrind 08-03-2014 02:52 AM

Do you ever get to the Lower Mainland? If so, you could have the part shipped to Blaine or Sumas (I get stuff shipped to Sumas a few times a month) and pick it up for $3.00. That will bring the shipping cost down significantly.

I think I found a spring that will work for you. Want to PM a mailing address to me? The spring isn't great, but it'll work.

I'm never off the island. But that would be the way to do it

The spring has arrived
Weldangrind you've come through again !!
This is exactly what I had in mind.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4D9705E756.jpg

Going to try and find some material for the kick stand at work / the sheds at home.

I'll keep you guys posted. Not sure exactly what progress will be like.
But I have a vision lol

Thanks

Dave

Weldangrind 08-12-2014 05:35 PM

I'm looking forward to following your project. Glad to hear the spring finally arrived.

bogieboy 08-13-2014 08:53 AM

if i was still in chicago i have the pegs/kickstand from my xl75 sitting in the shop... but i am not there and dont know when i will be back to chicago since i moved out to NY...

Dave_D 08-13-2014 09:59 PM

Freebie XR80 kickstand version 1

I have a feeling I will be redesigning this thing lol as it's kinda a butcher job
But here is a mock 1st attempt. I was to lazy to drag out welder. You will see :p

Found a length of stainless in the shed. Only usable piece I could find

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...3000B5F05C.jpg

I cut a manageable piece off

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...764BC025D0.jpg

Then I created the "hinge" end
Drilled a hole

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...7820DED55E.jpg

Then notched the end out to go over the factory mount

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...665A34A9E2.jpg

I drilled a smaller hole slightly longer then the spring. From the original spring mount
Here's where I was to lazy to weld
I used a bolt and 2 nuts to creat the second spring tab

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...7445F3008D.jpg

Moving it through its motion

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...BCDE91D66A.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...B4BDF0EA48.jpg

I then cut it to length. Have no way of explaining how I got the length. Just a guess lol

Here it is on the stand

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...920E165016.jpg

I'll try it for a bit as is. But guessing it will go back to the drawing board lol

This took all of an hour so wasn't expecting perfection

That's all for now

Dave

Dave_D 08-14-2014 02:02 AM

I have version 2 designed in my head already. I'll run this one till version 2 is built lol

Weldangrind 08-16-2014 12:14 AM

It appears that you notched the tube with a steak knife. Very Red Green of you. :D

Nicely done beta test. I don't see the point of welding a spring point if the nut and bolt do the trick. You'll need to weld a foot onto the tube, but that's easy.

I think I'm going to create a hinge piece out go something solid like 1"x1" square or something. And weld this piece of stainless to it. Slightly angled outward to be more stable. Seems very vertical at the moment and I'll put a foot on it.

Notch was done with an angle grinder lol. Everything was eyeballed. Version 2 I'm aiming for perfection. Just need to accumulate pieces now. I have the pieces I need at work. Plus band saw ect.
So I think I'll be able to make something much nicer.

Dave

Weldangrind 08-16-2014 01:27 AM

I would've cut it with an angle grinder like you did. My buddy has a band saw that I can use, and I never think of that.

Dave_D 08-19-2014 12:28 AM

No major update here but the petcock I ordered is genre
http://www.ebay.com/itm/271268429437
I can finally stop clamping the fuel line lol
I dident think it was going to come with the strainer either. None in the tank right now.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...B876733717.jpg

Dave

SpudRider 08-19-2014 12:54 AM

That fuel petcock is a great deal at $6.50, delivered.

Weldangrind 08-19-2014 10:28 AM

The strainer is nice, but I still use an inline filter. I've learned to buy only filters that are made in USA, since I've had the China filters come apart on me. Raw fuel on a hot engine is a bad mix.

Dave_D 08-19-2014 12:56 PM

I'll still be using an inline filter on this bike.
Currently have a chineese one on it lol hmm
Might look into a replacement

Dave

SpudRider 08-19-2014 02:38 PM

I installed this inline fuel filter on my Zong. :)

Dave, this is the supermoto fender I was telling you about. It would probably look good on Jess' bike. Find it here: http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=2979100123 It's about $6.22 plus shipping.
