Lost Title Workaround

If you don't have title for your motorcycle, you can still get your bike registered in Vermont with a Vermont license plate. Once you have a license plate in Vermont, you can get a title for you bike in your home state by transferring the license plate. You can learn how to accomplish this task by reading the following thread. ;)

This is the Chinariders best option to the no title or incomplete MSO.

We have had one success so far.

Weldangrind 09-10-2013 12:09 PM

I fixed the Lost Title Workaround link.

SpudRider 08-28-2015 12:29 PM

Here is a link to a thread on another forum which describes the registration process in Vermont.

Vermont only titles and requires the vin to be verified by law enforcement or DMV for bikes 500 cc and up.

katoranger 06-27-2018 02:20 PM

I bought a 1988 Suzuki Samurai on Monday. Looks like the process may work for it also. I think I will give it a try. Kansas would allow me to register it if it was 35 years old. Vermont is 15 years.

katoranger 06-28-2018 05:46 PM

From what I am reading it will cost me about $100. $23 for antique plates and $77 tax. I am going to fill out the paperwork and mail it in. Worst case is that it comes back.

I mailed off the paperwork and a check tonight.

As a resident of Vermont I can say that it is a strange place, where else can you own and carry a gun with little to no requriements, register virtually anything with wheels are tracks (I have registered strange Eastern Bloc military vehicles without them batting an eye) provided you pay the tax and fees, yet get taxed nearly to death for no good reason.

I am dying to see if I could register a Tekken Fuego

katoranger 07-03-2018 07:07 PM

I am more than happy to send Vermont money if it means that I can get registration. Kansas didn't want my money.

katoranger 07-06-2018 06:49 PM

One week. No tags or denial yet.

katoranger 07-09-2018 03:33 PM

Update, I got my application returned. They highlighted a couple blanks for me to fill out and I forgot to sign it. The amount I sent in must have been good as they had marked it ok. I filled in the blanks, signed and dated it and sent it back.

We will see.

cbrfxr67 07-09-2018 05:01 PM

Eagerly waiting for the outcome! Thanks for posting!!

katoranger 07-09-2018 06:08 PM

I will keep the updates coming. Expecting another week and half to two weeks.

When I got mine back they whited out info that was not needed, I think they whited out my CT drivers license number. for our VT friend, I love your state. I was there last week checking on my property in NH. Of course I had to stop at the VT country store right off exit 2 on rt 91.

The taxes were the only thing keeping me from buying property in VT, now the 10 round mag limit will keep me away from owning property there. VT has very loose gun laws yet incredibly low crime.... how could that be? If you can buy a gun, you can carry a gun.

I wish I kept track of how long it took when I registered mine in VT.

katoranger 07-22-2018 08:36 AM

Still waiting. I expect something anytime.

cbrfxr67 07-22-2018 07:16 PM

Anxiously waiting to see how it goes

katoranger 07-23-2018 02:49 PM

My plate just arrived. They took my money. I am good until next July.

cbrfxr67 07-23-2018 03:08 PM

awesomesauce!

katoranger 08-02-2018 08:03 AM

I am expecting my actual registration card anytime now too.

Miss Mercedes 08-02-2018 11:40 PM

I have a friend who registered three scooters through VT. He specifically seeks out ones without titles because of it. :)

katoranger 08-12-2018 11:06 PM

I got the registration card. Totally legit now.

jhawk19 10-15-2018 09:32 AM

So this is working still? I thought I read somewhere that Vermont was "catching on" to this option and stopped by replying that they won't register "dirt bikes".

I'm in SC and this may be my only option as I don't have a title, MCO or bill of sale (as I type this). I asked the seller for the MCO and BOS, but I haven't gotten a response yet.

Be patient and wait for the MCO and BOS. It will make life easier. It shouldn't take more than a week after requesting it.

What do you do about the VIN verification Vermont DMV ask for? Their website shows a VIN verification form that ask for a "badge number" "agency" and if Vin was run through "NCIC" (National Crime Information Center).

Ive been running into some good deals on 70's street legal 2 strokes and might pick one. Thanks.

Registering A Hinda Clone In VT

I was just reading up on registering a new Honda Clone in VT and I might be wrong since I hardly understand the process yet but it also seems like it might be cheaper than registering the thing in my home state of CT!

Also I am wondering does anyone know if the registering in VT for Non-VT residents loophole is still working now in April of 2019? I heard rumors it was being shut down and am a little confused about the whole thing so any answers would be much appreciated. Thank You!

cbrfxr67 04-04-2019 10:18 AM

Haven't heard anything about it not working anymore. I think Vermont dgaf and will take the revenue anyway they can get it. Just my .02 of course could be totally wrong. My sticker expires in July but I'll be going local to swap it over then,...

I read up on their rules recently and I THINK you don't need a VIN Verification or anything if your bike is under 300cc!!!

I am definitley going to try to register my Chonda there...maybe even get vanity plates with the money I save not getting a title here in Corrupticut..err I meant Connecicut

You really have nothing to lose. If you get the paperwork wrong they send everything back along with your check and note on what to fix. (Don't forgot to sign the form.) No questions asked and I registered a Suzuki Samurai. Still sporting its Vermont Antique tag almost a year later. I plan to renew it when it comes due. Will transfer to Kansas in 2023 when it is eligible for a Kansas antique tag.

Irishjew 04-17-2019 09:51 PM

There is always the South Dakota route as well. It still works because I just went through the process. Easiest way to plate my Apollo 250 dirt bike.

katoranger 05-02-2019 10:50 AM

I am not familiar with the South Dakota route.

Jdavis 06-20-2019 06:17 PM

I just purchased a BS 250 and I cannot register it in the state of Indiana because the bike has never been registered before it’s a 2016 so it’s technically brand new with only 300 miles on it but it was never ran through the BMV how do I go about registering it if they require me to have a bill of sales from the company even though I did not purchased the bike from the Company I purchased it from someone who owned it after the fact I have the origin certificate but that doesn’t seem to be good enough what do I do now...................... ......“ help please “........

ARVierra 04-11-2021 09:29 AM

Hi this is my first post here, and yes I failed to do the research prior to my purchase(also my first bike ever).
I bought a Hawk DLX 250 EFI from Moto Pro on amazon. They said they would send me the paperwork(it has only been a week since). However in the event that they do not, will this method work even though the bike is not 15 years old? Or does that only matter when I try to register in my home state?

Martyj115 04-29-2021 04:12 PM

I also want to mention a "Bonded Title" workaround for those that aren't eligible for the VT loophole.

I was able to get a proper certificate of origin, but it first seemed like I was going to need to register my new bike without one. In MA (and I believe most states have something similar), as long as you contact the title division to get approval, you can buy a surety bond (worth 1.5 times the price of the bike... $5000 bond only costs $100) and use that to get what is called a bonded title, making the ride an "undocumented bonded vehicle". As long as nobody contests the title or claims the bike is rightfully theirs within three years, the bonded title will expire and they will issue you a clean title.

I keep seeeing "the vermont loophole" which I believe is only good for a vehicle over 15 years old, which would not apply to most of us with relatively newer "chinabikes" so I was happy to see there is another option!

Bruces 04-29-2021 04:55 PM

The Vermont title works with most China bikes because they don’t title bikes under a certain displacement that I can’t remember right now ,but the 250cc bikes are good for sure .

Aussie_in_MO 03-04-2024 07:39 PM

Didn't see it mentioned here but Vermont closed the out of state registration loophole last year.

What about SD and ME?

Aussie_in_MO 03-05-2024 10:26 PM

No idea. I registered my '74 Honda MT125 and '79 XR500 through VT over a decade ago and haven't bought a bike without title since
