Hydraulic Clutch?

Shamelessly stolen from Joe's China Blog...
This would be neat!

Azhule 07-18-2016 12:53 PM

It doesn't cost that much, maybe 40 or 50$ total to order all the parts... and the cost is worth it for every motorcycle (IMO)

$20 for the Hydraulic Clutch Lever/Master Cylinder... $10 or so for the Hydraulic Clutch Slave Cylinder... and another 8 - $10 for the Stainless Steel Line ;)

Juanro 07-18-2016 12:54 PM

You beat me to post it!
I don't know if it's a specific RX3 clutch, or one of the universal types sold everywhere.

It doesn't look to be a 'bike specific upgrade' from the pic, it looks like they used the stock mounting bracket and everything for the 'Hydraulic Clutch' on that RX3

Do you have links for the parts?

Adjuster 07-18-2016 01:18 PM

Do you still get the same clutch hand feel like if you need to feather the clutch or whatever its called?

Better.

I prefer hydraulic clutches every time nowadays.

Bruce's 07-18-2016 05:12 PM

I have had bad luck with those clutch systems ,the slave cylinder is a pile of crap that at best seems to last a month or two ,and if you break the lever ,they are hard to find .I wouldn't give you a red cent for one .I have dealt with 6 of them ,and every single one was removed within a month or two and tossed in the circuler file .
Your mileage may vary .

Thanks for the heads-up!....and lets not forget that the clutch pull on these is very light, not like my old Ironhead that almost took two hands.

The guy we bought our RX3's from also included a new, extra clutch cable. Hopefully it's a scarecrow.

Anyone else notice the upside down OCS?

Bruce's 07-18-2016 06:05 PM

I should of mentioned the ones I have used were cheap chineese pitbike units ,if you guys are looking at something from a real company you might be alright .

bogieboy 07-18-2016 09:14 PM

If you're good with dropping 250 or so maturation makes a mighty fine hydro clutch

Azhule 07-18-2016 09:35 PM

Magura makes some great Hydraulic Clutch systems too, can find them for $220 or so depending on the bike

I put a Magura kit on my '99 KLR 650  one of the better mods I have done for the hefty KLR was get a Hydraulic Clutch put on it

FLrider 07-18-2016 11:09 PM

Seems a unneeded complication on such small and easy to use cable clutch on these 250's. i don't know just my thought?

pete 07-19-2016 02:14 AM

Might be a good mod for the old Montesa Cota 348...
they must have the heavyest clutch pull in the histroy
of motorcycling..
no fiber plates all steel with clutch springs stronger than a
chinese bikes rear shock...

my roketa is on its 3rd cable in just under a year and a half... thankfully rhey jave all broken on pre ride checkovers and not along my 30 mi commute.... that's where my interest is for a hydro clutch....

How much was it for each cable? I'm sure you are right around the cost of a ('cheap') Hydraulic setup already... and you would only have to change out a few cents worth of DOT4 or Mineral Oil every 2 or so years with a Hydraulic Clutch

Check your pivot hole in the handle where the cable end sits. Sounds like a burr not allowing the cable end to pivot. That was an early Victory issue. "The Dreaded Burr".

around $8 a cable shipped from a us warehouse... i will probably piece my own clutch together as i want to match my custom brake lever....LOL and the el cheapo slaves are a bear to bleed....

they break about an inch from the cable end in the lever... first thing i checked is that the ball can pivot.it may be hitting a ridge, but at this point, i have been wanting a hydro clutch anywho, because i have extra heavy clutch springs.... and i had a hydro on my old pocket bike.... man that was a beast....would do 67 mp[h gps confirmed.... race cam, vm26 carb, straight thru exhaust... pic for posterity...LOL

Holy cow! That's an animal! :-)

GlennR 03-06-2018 01:58 PM

Any updates on installing a hydraulic clutch? I'd like to try a cheap one if there's a decent one that works well and will last.

bogieboy 04-05-2018 10:21 AM

interesting that you ask GlennR... i just installed one LAST NIGHT...LOL i had a random left hand master cylinder from an old john deere atv in my posession, and installed it with one of these... sooooooo nice and smooth.... took almost a half hr just to bleed though.... i can post some installed pics tonight...

That style of slave cylinder is a pain in the butt to bleed. I have done one so far, and the best method I have found for them is to elevate the slave above the master somehow, and then bleed it uphill. Really awkward to do without a bleed screw too. Another method that worked fairly well was to set the slave on a rack or tray over something to collect dripping brake fluid, crack the banjo just enough to start a slow leak, and gravity bleed it. This method takes forever though.

In either case, pre-filling the slave with a bit of fluid and cycling it a little to get the air out will help immensely.

Cables are so much simpler. Otom makes a nice brace that stops the flexing of the retainer issue and makes the pull a tiny bit lighter:

I have a Karoo trials bike that I never ride because of the broken hydraulic clutch. It's just a bigger pain than it's worth.

pyoungbl 04-05-2018 07:36 PM

Chonda3, how about a link to Otom stuff. That brace looks interesting.

Hummm, 6 of them for abut $12. Someone, please put in an order and I'll get one from you.

Megadan, i found it bled out fairly easily...LOL slave lower than the master, and pump the slave in and out slowly. each stroke pulls oil down the hose to the slave, and each return stroke purges the air back up the hose to the master cylinder. shake the slave and hose about every 10 stokes to shake loose any stubborn air, and it will go quite smooth....

Well... it's Taobao. 6 pictures doesn't mean you get six of them.

There are probably some less expensive vendors, I just posted the first one I found. I'll see if I can find the actual link I bought from. Seems like it was $8 or $9.

i have heavy springs in my clutch, and have snapped 3 cables in 3 years.... LOL i alsio have a good background in hydraulics from my day job, working on john deere tractors.... so fixing them comes easy to me... broken cable you are sol until the new cable shows up...LOL

ChondaChondaChonda 04-06-2018 01:33 PM

Well, come fix this Karoo!! Lol

2LZ 04-06-2018 01:59 PM

I'm with Peter Y. If anyone makes a batch order of these, count me in.

We need some pictures and info on this Karoo ,I can’t find anything on my google box ,and usually know ,own, and have fixed all the weirdo bikes but never heard of this one .

It's actually a Key Roo made by Fantic. My bad memory strikes again.

I had no idea it was a fantic ,I had a burgundy one around 1995 or so ,when it broke ,it was a long wait before replacement parts floated over here in that darned bottle .Does yours have the rads along the backbone under the tank ?

bogieboy 04-07-2018 07:39 AM

Chonda chonda chonda, i would start with a new clutch hose for the bike.... i highly doubt that the hose clamp on that is factory, nor do i believe that it can stand up to the pressures potentially involved with hydraulics....my friend/coworker dan (a former bmw bike mechanic) agrees with me as well...LOL

so start with a fresh hose, bleed it real good, and try again...

ChondaChondaChonda 04-07-2018 08:53 AM

Yeah. The hose clamp was the previous owner.

I've never really tried to bleed it - just looked for the hose with no luck. Been meaning to pull it apart and take it to a hose place; but it just hasn't happened.

This is why I say a cable is simpler. If this bike had a cable I would have it fixed by now.
