Hey all!

Mike here from Houston TX. Brand new to sport bikes and learning about them. Just recently picked up a 2012 JL250P-2 from a friend (ROKETA MC-25-250?) with only 250 miles on the chassis and engine.

I've always been a fan of the Honda CBR (particularly the Repsol 250) but I've never owned, nor even ridden a bike until I bought this one. I'm just trying to soak up as much info as I can with regards to technique and safety while I get my feet wet.

So far I'm really enjoying this bike and it has behaved pretty well. The Spyder in the first pic is my other toy.

Any other JL owners on this forum?

:thanks:

Sweet bike, and awesome Spyder!

Thanks for joining us.

I think Daeouse owns a JL250P-2, but I'm not sure.

A couple more pics of the Spyder. I'll have more of the JL in the near future.

Thanks again for the warm welcome!

I'd love to take one of those for a rip.

Thanks man! They're both definitely fun in very different ways. The Spyder is a gutted 1900 lb gokart (mid engine) with some response mods... adjustable coilovers, lightweight pulley kit, clutch & lightweight flywheel, lighter wheels and better tires. The car is lowered about 2.5 inches, and handles really well.

The bike is, well, a bike!

I've been poking around the forums here and there the last few days. I don't think I've found any other active JL250P owners. I'm learning the JL is not necessarily a popular brand? At least, maybe in the USA?

Do most people around here own bikes under 250cc?

I'd love to learn about the motor in your bike. May we see pics of it? I'm wondering if it's Honda or Yamaha based.

Yes, most of what has brought us here are small bikes, 250 and under. Several members also own larger bikes as well.

Same here. I've been trying to dig up info but haven't found much. To be honest, this is my very first experience with anything motorcycle related so my experience is very limited. I'm really interested in learning more about this bike.

As far as I can tell there are two versions of this bike...

JL250P seems to be more popular, twin cylinder 250 clone of the Honda Rebel and/or Nighthawk. The limited amount of info/videos I've found about this bike (or the Roketa branded one) has been on this version. All the info I've found seems to be pre 2012. This bike is obviously Dual Exhaust.

http://www.jclusa.com/upfiles/JL-250-color-Black.jpg

My JL250P-2 seems less popular, maybe because it is newer? Mine is a 2012/2013. My engine is a single cylinder 250 and only has one exhaust pipe/muffler on the right side, the other side is blank. I can try to post some pics in the near future.

As far as I can tell everything else seems the same...

http://store.oohla.com/storefiles/te...9141121639.JPG

http://store.oohla.com/storefiles/te...9140875138.JPG

My engine breathes through a little cable chocked PZ30 carburetor with a little filter attached to the end of it. This seems to be a really common carb from what I've learned online? I took it apart to clean it when I first bought the bike. That was my very first forte into carbs and learning about them. All my experience with cars has been EFI related.

Any ideas?

Weldangrind 02-27-2015 10:52 AM

That's definitely a Honda-based single. I can tell you more about it if you can show me the left side of the motor.

That carb will work with your stock setup, but if you start modifying (performance exhaust, etc.), you'll want a Mikuni so you can actually find replacement jets. Expect to pay less than $40 delivered for a Mikuni.

jimlao92 02-27-2015 01:55 PM

Wow nice bike how much did you pay for it? i agree with weld definitely get a mikuni and with that look for some airbox and exhaust mods i'm pretty sure it'll wake up that bike. the spyder is nice! i would love one with a 2zz and a 6speed =)

I'll be sure to post more pics soon

Is there something in particular from what you've seen that makes you think it's a Honda clone? Or is that simply something the Chinese bikes are known for?

The bike sounds good and runs really well as is, but I'm sure I'll want more power as I get more comfortable with riding. I'll definitely look into a Mikuni when the time comes, especially if they're really that cheap!

Thanks for all the help :thanks:

Thanks Jim! It's a good looking bike and I got a really good deal on it. I'll be looking for upgrades in the near future, knowing myself as I do.

The Spyder is a lot more fun than I expected. I've had it for almost five years now and I still really enjoy it. I've also owned a few other Toyotas, including an AW11, AE86, and a Supra.

I really miss that thing sometimes.

I can tell from the right side engine cover. The location of the sight glass and the clutch linkage gives it away.

Got it! I'll definitely post more pics and see if you can narrow it down even further for me.

Honda clones are about 80 percent of the China bike market. Yamaha and Suzuki clones are not as common.

Good to know, thank you sir! Is there one or two Honda engines which are most often cloned? Any particular reason as to why?

:thanks:

katoranger 02-28-2015 11:02 PM

Not sure why, but usually the CG125 is the basis. Was never offered by Honda in the US.

Weldangrind 03-01-2015 01:07 PM

Another very common Honda to be cloned is the CB250 single. Also never offered here by Honda.

The Yamaha 200 frame of architecture has also been cloned, with remarkable quality. It is the same design as the SR185, TW200, AG200, XT225 and TT-R230.

I think the Suzuki clone is based on a DR200, but poked 'n' stroked out to 200. An excellent motor.

The CG125 that Kato referenced has appeared as a 150, 175, 200, 223 and 230. Reliable like a tractor. Sounds like one too.

SpudRider 03-01-2015 02:23 PM

I think the Suzuki clone engines sold by Qingqi are based on the DR125. My Zongshen clone of a Yamaha engine, the ZS167FML engine, now has accumulated almost 68,000 miles of hard riding.

Didn't know about the CB250 single. I'm going to have to try to dig up some info on this engine, take my panels off, and compare.

Thanks again!

Wow, 68,000 miles! How long have you had that thing, and how often do you ride it?!

Made a few small changes to the NST250 today. Still waiting for better weather to make a few more.

More pics, including engine pics, hopefully soon.

I bought my Zong in the summer of 2008, so I will have owned it for seven years this summer. :) I ride it very often. ;)

Exactly right. My typo. That explains why I said the DR200 has been poked 'n' stroked out to 200. :hehe:

Welcome! Sportbike owners do not seem to join us as much as other kinds of bikes owners. My guess is, like you, they buy them oftentimes from other first time riders ( in some cases from those who didn't take care of them--not saying that detail is the case with you and your friend), are able to fix their problems (if there were issues) while learning to ride, and then move on to bigger and better things.

I hope you stick around for a while, because it would be nice to see how these bikes hold up (as compared to the enduros many of us have) over the long term.

You're right, I've picked up on all those facts while looking for info on the bike I own.

I've also had to tinker with the carb on this bike due to it sitting for some time before I came to own it, but since the carb work it has been running really good.

I've also been told by all my biker friends that I will likely want more power and speed sooner or later, but we'll see. This is my first bike ever and I plan on keeping it for quite some time IF it runs and functions well.

So far so good!

Finally had some nice weather today. Checked some of the nuts and bolts on the bike and took it down the street to a neighborhood bar. Randomly met a couple of older riders, one on a GXR and another on a Yamaha.

Pretty good. I've checked over some of the nuts and bolts on my bike and everything seems to be good. I am missing one of the bolts that holds the gas tank in place... leading to a bit of a rattle at certain speeds. Will need to get that taken care of soon.

I've only put about 70 miles on the bike since the purchase, and still on the same tank of gas, so I'm still happy, still learning, still going.

:thanks:

Get out there, and enjoy the bike for what it is. I hope it gives you many happy miles.
